| Species "Hunted":
Carp, Longnose Gar, Bowfin. "EQUIPMENT INVESTMENT":
Most* equipment, drinks, & snacks (except your license & meal) furnished. (*You may
need a pair of polaroid sunglasses, a ball hat, shooting glove, arm guard and bow rigged
for bowfishing IF you shoot left-handed.)
"Hunt" a variety of large impoundments, rivers,
munincipal reservoirs and private lakes.
Season: March - August - As lake levels and weather conditions
permit. February, (MAYBE), IF days are mild. Bowfin
and grass carp are a possibility!
Licenses to Bowfish: "NC Annual Sportsman" or
"Lifetime NC Sportsman" license will suffice for residents!
Residents may also purchase a state fishing license ($15) and a "Special
Devices/Non-Commercial" license ($10.)
(*See below for info on alternative Virginia "Non-Resident" fishing
(Bowfishing) in reciprocal agreement waters!)
Non-Residents must purchase a Non-resident State Fishing License ($30) and a
Non-Resident Special Fishing Devices (basic/Non-Commercial) license ($50.) (*A 1-day
Non-resident Fishing license can be bought for $10.00; 3-day for $15.00.)
Licenses can be purchased by phone and credit card by calling: 1-888-2HUNTFISH.
Licenses may also be purchased directly from the Wildlife Resources
Commission by applying in person or writing: Transaction Management;
P.O. Box 29565; Raleigh, NC 27626-0565
N.C. licenses to Bowfish apply to all waters in N.C. except as
outlined in the regulations digest. N.C. has reciprocal agreements with the states
of Virginia, Tennessee and Georgia.. NOT with South Carolina! Most waters that
we will bowfish in are withing the borders of N.C., or lie on the border of N.C. and
Virginia. So, N.C. resident or non-resident licenses are valid for
these waters.
SPECIAL NOTE: IF you are a "Non-Resident",
and you choose to bowfish waters that lie across the NC/VA border, a
"reciprocal" agreement may exist that will allow you to purchase a Virginia
"Non-Resident" fishing license. These waters are most likely to be Kerr
Lake and Lake Gaston. The Virginia "Non-Resident" license is much cheaper
than the NC license, and will suffice for shooting fish in any reciprocal
agreement waters. A statewide VA Fishing License (Non-Resident) costs $30.00
annually and a 5-day permit is only $6.00 for Non-Residents. So, check
with the "Virginia Dept. of Game & Inland Fisheries" to purchase a license
or for more information. Only Carp and Gar may be taken with bow and arrow in
Virginia inland waters with bow and arrow. No license is required to
shoot fish in "salt water."

|
| GAR's GOOD EATIN' TOO !
|
<-Step #1: Sever Head
(Halfway); Cut top of back w/ tin shear.. back
to dorsal fin. |
<-Step #2: Cut hide away from body.
|
<-Step #3: Carve filets out of body. |
<-Step #4: Stir Frying Gar is a
"Good" way to prepare them! But, you can cook'em just
about any way you wish! |
|
|
|
|
|
I've also fried gar steaks in a pan and grilled them on char-grill..after
marinading them overnight.. Battered deep fried fillets in peanut oil are good too!
Also try soaking cubed gar in refrigerated salt water overnight. Then, boil in
sugar water for 15 minutes.. Dip in melted butter and cocktail sauce.. tastes somewhat
like boiled scallops and/or lobster!
Contrary to popular belief.. Gar is very good table fare! No bones.. NONE
whatsoever! The meat is firm.. white meat with only a "mild" fish flavor.
Biggest problem is cleaning them. You need the right tools: ie:
axe, hatchet or saw; tin shears, filet knife and old pair of work gloves.
A "Noose" is a "MUST" item
for handling Gar and other "Mean N' Nasty" critters with "sharp"
edges all over them! I make my own.. and they work well. Call or email
and ask me how.
